Volume 42 of "Progress in Drug Research" contains seven reviews and the various indexes which facilitate its use and establish the con nection with the previous volumes. The articles in this volume deal with organization and management of drug research; luteinizing hor mone regulators; natural products as anticancer agents; flavonoids and their pharmacological activity; serenics in the control of mental disturbances; Transfer Factor and its application and with Transfer Factor in malignancy. In the 34 years that "Progress in Drug Research" has existed, the Edi tor has enjoyed the valuable help and advice of many colleagues. Readers, the authors of the reviews, and last but not least, the review ers have all contributed greatly to the success of this series. Although the comments received so far have generally been favorable, it is nevertheless necessary to analyze and to reassess the current position and the future direction of such a review series. So far, it has been the Editors intention to help disseminate informa tion on the vast domain of drug research, and to provide the reader with a tool with which to keep abreast of the latest developments and trends. The reviews in PDR are useful to the non-specialists, who can obtain an overview of a particular field of drug research in a rela tively short time."

Valproic acid was first synthesized in 1882 by Burton, but there was no known clinical use until its anticonvulsant activity was fortuitously discovered by H. Meunier in 1963 in the laboratory of G. Carraz. The first clinical trials of the sodium salt of valproate were reported in 1964 by Carraz. It was marketed in France in 1967 and was released in the United States in 1978 for the treatment of epilepsy. Since then, valproate has established itself worldwide as a major antiepileptic drug against several types of seizures. Clinical experience with valproate has continued to grow in recent years, including use of valproate for diseases other than epilepsy, for example in bipolar disorders and migraine. In this book, emphasis is placed on the scientific background leading to the discovery of valproate and its clinical development into one of the most widely and successfully used antiepileptic drugs, a real milestone in drug therapy. The current state of knowledge of valproate is reviewed by experts in the field, including new hypotheses on its mechanisms of action, its metabolism into pharmacologically active metabolites, its unique distribution characteristics, its undesirable hepatotoxic and teratogenic adverse effects, and its various clinical uses. The monograph is aimed at a broad readership, particularly neurologists, psychiatrists and basic scientists working in the field of epilepsy research. The whole field of drug research has become a minefield of sensitive issues with the opponents entrenched at opposite extremes taking pot shots at each other. The attacks made on drug research and the pharmaceutical industry in particular have become so venomous that an attempt needed to be made to provide a balanced ethical appraisal of the situation. Neither pro- nor antagonists are fully right, but some common grounds need to be found. The author believes that this commons grounds resides in the religious and philosophical foundations on which western industrial society has been built.
